Heliotest Set

Article number: 450.000.xxx

The Heliotest Set is a specialized test kit from IGT Testing Systems designed to evaluate the gravure printability of paper. It simulates real-world gravure printing conditions to predict performance reliably.

Gravure printability depends on multiple paper properties:

  • Surface condition
  • Dynamic compressibility
  • Wettability
  • Porosity

Measuring any single property alone cannot reliably predict print quality. The Heliotest integrates these factors into one test, enabling accurate forecasting—even for papers with similar individual characteristics. It measures the tendency for missing dots in halftone areas, a key indicator of smoothness and suitability for gravure (e.g., the longer the distance to the 20th missing dot, the better the printability).

Developed by the Centre Technique du Papier (CTP) in Grenoble, France, it applies to all grades of paper intended for gravure printing.

The method is standardized as NF Q 61-002 (also referenced in UNI/TR 11455 and IGT method W41).

How the Test Works

  • A special engraved printing disc (with variable halftone screen) is inked using the provided slow-drying red Heliotest ink.
  • Excess ink is removed via a doctoring system.
  • A print is made on the substrate (attached to the sector of the tester).
  • The result is evaluated by measuring the distance (in mm) from the print start to the 20th missing dot in the screened area—typically reported as the mean of multiple measurements (e.g., 10 prints) with standard deviation.
  • Higher values indicate superior gravure printability (better ink transfer and fewer defects).

Use fresh Heliotest ink (not older than 6 months) for accurate results. Some IGT models include integrated camera systems and software for automated analysis of missing dots.

Compatible IGT Printability Testers
The Heliotest Set is specifically designed for use with these IGT models (via compatible shafts, doctoring stations, and settings):

  • Amsterdam series: Amsterdam 1, 2, 5, and 6 (including Amsterdam H, dedicated to Heliotest with built-in analysis)
  • AIC2-5 series: AIC2-5 and AIC2-5T2000
  • Global Standard Tester (end-of-service) series: GST 2 and 3H

Note: Some models (e.g., Amsterdam H or Amsterdam 5/6 with camera) offer enhanced automation for Heliotest, including on-line image analysis.

Set Contents

  • Special Heliotest engraved printing disc
  • Doctoring system
  • Heliotest-specific slow-drying gravure ink (red, developed for the method)
  • Accessories for mounting and execution

For full execution details, refer to IGT method W41 Heliotest (available as a leaflet/PDF from IGT) or the NF Q 61-002 standard.

This test is widely used in quality control for paper mills, printers, and ink manufacturers to ensure substrates perform well in high-speed gravure presses, reducing risks like missing dots in packaging, magazines, or catalogs. For demos, check IGT’s official videos at the W41-leaflet (e.g., IGT Amsterdam). If you need visuals of the setup, test print examples, or the engraved disc:
